“Do This” Tutorial – Foundation Single Crochet

If you have read a Shibaguyz Designz crochet pattern, you have probably noticed we like to use the Foundation stitches as starters for our projects rather than a chain that is then worked back into.  We like the clean, decorative look of a Foundation stitch and the added elasticity this method of starting fabrics gives to garments.

For those who haven’t tried one of the Foundation stitches before, you are, basically, making the “chain” AND the first row of stitches simultaneously.  Pretty cool!  The basic Foundation stitches include: Foundation Single Crochet (Fsc); Foundation Half Double Crochet (Fhdc); Foundation Double Crochet (Fdc); and Foundation Treble Crochet (Ftr). Since you are working the “chain” and the first row of single, half double, double, treble, etc…, you are creating a flat and even border.  If your pattern calls for a textured stitch, this Foundation Row will look very different from your textured stitch so that must be taken into consideration.  That said… After mastering the basic Foundation stitches, there are also combination Foundation stitches that actually start your textured stitches right away while still giving you a flatter bottom edge to your work.  We’ll get into all of that later…

Cross Front Vest – Crochet World, April 2013

The April 2013 issue marks the 35th Anniversary of Crochet World magazine and we are thrilled to be a part of this landmark issue with our Cross Front Vest pattern.  The Cross Front Vest is crocheted in Tahki yarns Cotton Classic Lite and is a very easy pattern to make.  The side closure is a simple frog closure you can purchase at your local craft and hobby store.
