Located outside Portland, in Canby, Oregon; Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. This festival has long been known for its demonstrations, shopping, and livestock exhibitions. Now its time we add one new item to that list: AMAZING CROCHET CLASSES! The Shibaguyz are teaching 4 of our best and most unique classes at this year’s Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival. Here is a little about each one.
Fabric made from broomstick lace is mesmerizing with all of its swirling loops and curls. Garments, accessories and home décor items made from broomstick lace always bring out the gush factor with stitchers who recognize the skill involved with creating this unique form of lace. Wait… what?? You don’t have an extra broomstick, dowel or huge knitting needle lying around? Never fear! We will show you how to create this gorgeous lace stitch with one hook… yup… it’s broomstick with out the stick (get it… “Non-Stick”).
Now you can duplicate this stunning stitch using only one hook. And… a hook in any size! Imagine this same beautiful stitch done is very fine yarn in small stitches. The results are magic as you turn out row after row of Non-Stick Lace to create different fabrics with different drape and texture. And you won’t have to carry such a big stick!
Hooks For Sticks (aka Crochet for Knitters)!
Come on… you know you wanna… After all, stitches are stitches whether you use needles or hooks. We are going to build on your knowledge of knitting to show you how to be one of the cool kids and add a little (or a BIG) touch of crochet to your knitting. With a couple of easy modifications to your knitting skills, you’ll begin to crochet right away then we’ll move on to combining your new stitches to enhance your knitted pieces.
Yes, we will put crochet borders on your knit swatches BUT… wait for it… we’ll also put crochet in the MIDDLE of your knitting! I know… it sounds crazy… but we will pick up crochet stitches right off your knitting needle, work some crazy beautiful crochet magic, then pick up knitting stitches right from the crochet stitches. Yes. It is magic. And you will know how to do it at the end of this class.
Make Your First Garment – The Wrap Front Cardi
(Crocheters & Knitters)
The thought of making your first garment is a task so daunting and, seemingly, insurmountable that it can send the sturdiest stitcher into a vortex of fear and self-doubt. But fear not intrepid ones! We will stand by you and take the fear and doubt out of garment making so all you are left with is the knowledge to create a FAB finished project that will have you hooked on making your own fashionable wearables.
But where to begin? I’m glad you asked! Nothing is making a splash this year more than the wrap front cardi. This timeless classic has proven its longevity this season by popping up on runways, catwalks, department store racks and fashion magazines. We’ll start from scratch and design a custom made Wrap Front Cardi just for you! Pick the stitch, the fit and the drape… Voila! You’ll go home with the perfect pattern for the perfect multi-functional garment that will remain a classic in your wardrobe longer than those parachute pants from 1985. What?? Just me??
A Roving We Will Go (Knitting and Crochet with Roving)
We all know the joy of holding a new bundle of roving in our hands. The endless possibilities that these blank canvases of fabulous fiber conjure before our mind’s eye start our fingers to twitching and our thoughts turn to spindles, wheels, and rug latches. It’s a beautiful thing! But I submit for your consideration the addition of wielding a crochet hook and making FAB projects without all of that waiting for the roving to be spun into yarn. Instant gratification! Who doesn’t love that?
We will learn to work with roving to create “yarns” (sans wheels and spindles!) of varying weights so you can customize your finished project to reflect your own personal style and flare. Don’t have your own style and flare? That’s okay… we’ll show you some tricks along the way to really make this FAB fun and unique way of working with roving something you can be proud of… and make your friends jealous of your new rove-hooking prowess.
Tell all your friends in the Northwest to come by and see us at OFFF September 27-29th… and be sure to REGISTER for classes with us!
